Our Research Agenda and Approach

The Mockingbird Analytics research agenda seeks to dismantle systems of oppression and generate healing spaces for self-determination. This approach requires a strong, fundamental knowledge of the roots of inequities as well as the strategies that communities use to redistribute resources toward sustainable justice.

Dr. Marisa Turesky leads our research team, bringing over a decade of experience to advance equity and healing through participatory research and evaluation. As activist-scholars, our team uses a social movement lens to build leadership and learning for partners and clients to achieve their own revolutionary policies and practices. Below, read about our current and past projects.

We tailor different equity-based research methodologies to our client’s unique programs and research goals. One such method that we prioritize is Feminist Participatory Action Research (FPAR), which uses a feminist lens to explore intersectional systematic power inequities, particularly in the lives of women and gender minorities. Learn more here about FPAR and how it can benefit your nonprofit.

Some of the projects we have worked on:

Dr. Turesky’s research, which examines how identity and emotions shape people's access to places and services, has been published in top peer-reviewed journals. Additional projects include racial impact statements, reparations research, prison abolition program evaluations, economic justice impact research, restorative justice program evaluation, equity-based organizational evaluation plans, social-emotional learning evaluations, among others.

Some of our clients and partners include both community groups and think tanks, such as Equity Research Institute, the United Ways of California, the SELA Collaborative, The Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department, Aging Places, Aging People (APAP), and the June L. Mazer Lesbian Archive.
